WORLD TRACK CHAMPION GODFREY WINS ON THE ROAD
AT GERMAIN.COM TOUR DE GRANDVIEW

GRANDVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio – Track schmack. That was the prevailing sentiment after UCI World Track Omnium Champion Hayden Godfrey rode away with the win in Sunday’s Grandview Cycling Classic at the 2008 Germain.com Tour de Grandview in suburban Columbus, Ohio.

The New Zealander, a renowned track rider who road races as well, got into a nine-rider breakaway at the midpoint of the 40-mile feature and used every ounce of his track speed to sprint up the notorious Broadview Avenue hill and overcome an extremely game and competitive field that included 2007 U.S. National Elite Road Champion Paul Martin and defending Tour de Grandview Champion Kirk Albers.

Godfrey, who rides for the Ohio-based Inferno Racing team and lives and trains part time in the state, is a multiple national champion in New Zealand and a presumptive member of his country’s 2008 Olympic team.

Among the other winners on the weekend were Samantha Schneider (Sunday Women’s Pro Category), James Raddin (Sunday Men’s Category III-IV), Scott Wesseler (Sunday Men’s Category V), James Raddin (Sunday Men’s Masters), Cory St. Clair (Sunday Junior Category), Kevin Attkisson (Saturday Men’s Pro I-II), Christy Keely (Saturday Women’s Pro Category), Andrew Hague (Saturday Men’s Category III-IV), Scott Wesseler (Saturday Men’s Category V), Paul Wood (Saturday Masters Category) and Devin Hurst (Saturday Junior Category).

“It was another fantastic Tour,” said Tour organizer Julie Whitley of the Grandview Community Association. “We had a record field with lots of world-class riders, some incredibly competitive races, and great crowd and sponsor support. Except for a few moments of dodgy weather, it was an ideal weekend.”

The Germain.com Tour de Grandview Cycling Classic is Ohio’s premier cycling event, attracting an international field of 420 cyclists to central Ohio this year, as well as hundreds of cycling enthusiasts and spectators. Celebrating its 16th year in 2008, the Tour is organized by the non-profit Grandview Community Association with the support of the City of Grandview Heights and a host of local volunteers and sponsoring businesses.
